Shiloh Jolie-Pitt Dresses Like a Boy, and That’s OK!

Shiloh Jolie Pitt, daughter of the famous Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, has made headlines by her lack of frilly dresses and short hair cut. Fans and critics alike are shocked that a celebrity daughter has been seen sporting anything less than ruffled dresses and kitten heel shoes. Child care experts, however, say she’s just a normal child.

When we imagine celebrity girls, pictures of the elegantly dressed Suri Cruise or the fashionable Nahla  Berry come to mind first. So when Shiloh Jolie Pitts enters the scene, in a casual pair of toddler jeans, newsboy cap, and button down shirt, we take notice. Especially with her short cropped hair cut and insistence on being one of the boys.

Celebrity fashion often plays on the extremes of gendered style. It is not enough for an actress to wear a dress, she has to wear a dress that shows off her curves and makes her seem ultra feminine. In part, celebrity children are expected to dress the part as well. Boys are taken out in rugged, football and monster truck branded clothing; girls are seen in flowers and bows. It is unusual to see a celebrity child out in anything less.

Despite the shock of it, Shiloh’s dress is really nothing out of the ordinary. As many parents know, toddlers are notorious for putting their feet down when it comes to choosing clothing. If your little girl wants a sweater that matches her brother’s, you are just looking for a fight  if you try to steer her toward the dresses. Despite parents’, and society’s, ideas about clothes most toddlers have their own fashion plans in mind.

According to psychologist Lisa Rene Reynolds, Shiloh’s clothing choices, like that of many other girls who prefer jeans over dresses, is really a non-issue. In Hollywood, as the rest of the world, there will always be girls who prefer short hair cuts and boys who like flashes of color. Despite the stereotypes too often associated with fashion, how a child dresses is more a matter of personal taste.
