Lilly + Sid Interview: Spring Summer 2014 Collection

Lilly + Sid kids clothing is created by husband and wife team Emma & Imran Hassan who are based in London, UK. Wanting to learn more about the Lilly + Sid story, I had the opportunity to speak with Emma & Imran about how they launched the brand and what fun & unique designs are available for babies, girls and boys this Spring Summer 2014.

Lilly + Sid Interview with Emma & Imran

“We worked in the fashion industry for many years but we always wanted our own business, and we wanted to build it as a husband and wife team. It wasn’t until the birth of our daughter that we first came up with the idea for Lilly + Sid, which is named after our children.

We wanted to create a brand that produces funky and fun clothing – nothing too high fashion but still to be led by trends and also be great in quality and price points.

Lilly + Sid has unique handwriting because we’re inspired by both vintage pieces and also future trends. We look at old pattern cutting techniques and also lots of storybooks for print and pattern ideas. And we’ll mix things up with contemporary patterns and prints. All of our prints, stripes and color palettes are designed in-house, so they’re all exclusive to us.

Lilly + Sid is very much about print and pattern. We like to mix things up a bit. So we do use lots of stripes and all overprints.

We started off with babywear and always have intended to stay a baby wear brand. But as our customers grew, they kept on asking us to go older in our sizing. So last year we launched our older-aged range which runs up to 8 years.

From The Art Spring Summer 2014 Collection

Our Spring-Summer 2014 collection is called “From The Art” and it’s inspired by British Artists. So the starting point was the Damien Hirst exhibition at the Tate Modern Gallery in the UK. In the range, you’ll see lots of fun creatures, dots and stripes patterns, and some more vicious sea creatures, bones and more.

We make sure that we use nice quality fabrics that are easy to wear and easy care. Also, there is a focus on vintage. So we have some vintage seaside prints.

My favorite older boys piece this season is the British Bulldog T-shirt because I think the trend for motif dressing just keeps gaining momentum.

For baby boys, our anchor print romper set is kind of a classic Lilly + Sid piece. You’ve got a striking print, with a bit of cute detailing.

On the girls’ side, I particularly like our ruffled girls’ skater dress. We mixed up the nautical stripe with sorbet pastel trim which we feel are really important for the season.

All the new Sunsafe Swimsuits are a completely new category for us this season. I particularly like the Zebra Joe Character. The Swimsuits are UPB 50 so you’ve got great protection from the sun for baby as well as looking really funky.

We’re very lucky to be stocked in about 200 independent boutiques in the UK. The most famous ones being Harvey Nichols, House of Fraser, Harrods. In China, we have our own store in Shanghai which has been an amazing adventure. We’ve also got on our own web store, lillyandsid.com where you can shop online, and find out more about our stockists.”
