Seam Kids Clothing Interview: Fall Winter 2014-2015

I love discovering new brands, and at Playtime New York I met Seam Clothing designer by Cindy Estes who is based out of Boston. During our interview, Cindy shared with me her story on how she became a kids fashion designer. It all started with a beautiful layette for her daughter that when she put it on looked tight and far from being comfy.

Soon Cindy started creating comfy and washable clothes for her daughter, then for friends and later she decided to take to trade. Seam clothing designs pieces that children want to wear are easy to move in, and parents have an easy time taking care of.

Meet Cindy Estes – Designer of Seam Clothing

“When my second child was a little girl, (I was by trade a graphic designer) I quit and was at home. I was so excited to have a girl and I found this layette and thought it was going to be beautiful. I put in on her and she looked uncomfortable. It looked tight and ill-fitting. I started to look for things and was finding that the clothes I loved, I could not throw in the dryer.

I had four kids so I didn’t have that kind of time, and they threw up on their clothes all of the time. So I started to find fabrics that were durable and that I could work with. So I started to make things for her when she was about one. And then people started asking for them. So occasionally I would make some clothes for friends. Or there was one boutique that I would make them for – Lester Harry’s in Boston. And then when my youngest was in kindergarten I decided to take it to trade.

What’s special about my brand? I really wanted it to be very comfortable. I spent 12 years in a Catholic school uniform, which was itchy and uncomfortable. And I think I have that hang up a bit. And so I’m picking elastics that are lingerie elastics so that they give and they aren’t constricting. And I’m making it out of 100% cotton, or a poly that’s got a lot of comforts. Or a little bit of lycra and cotton.

So what I’m really trying to do is make something that the child can move in. They can look great in. And they want to wear. And the parent has an easy time taking care of.

This is one of my absolute favorite looks on a child. I built it with a grosgrain ribbon that has 3 adjustable connections so they can move it however they want it to fit.

It’s got a boat neck which I always like and I’ve lined it with a different color so when they’re moving around you see the special color pattern. And in the front, it’s 50% cotton and 50% silk that we’ve dyed but has this suede silk finish to it, and it’s all been washed and dried. So it just comes out of the wash this way, and it’s so comfortable on children.

This is a new dress we just did, called the Leslie dress. It has a grosgrain elasticized space here. And we found this fabulous gridded lightweight polar fleece. And it’s fully reversible. So I’ll show you the other side. You have a completely different look on the inside.

This is a coat that we’ve done. It’s called the Catherine Coat with a three-button closure. It’s cotton velvet on the outside but it’s completely washable. We put polyester grosgrain ribbon at the bottom detail. And the inside is a cuddle fabric. This has all been washed and dried, and this is the way it comes out. So the child has a soft feeling on the inside, but they also have a dress-up look on the outside. And we’ve included a detachable turtleneck with a grosgrain detail in case it’s a little bit colder and they want a little bit more. But they can also take it off completely.”

Thanks to Cindy Estes designer of Seam Clothing for sharing her story at Playtime New York. I look forward to meeting her again and sharing future girl’s clothing collections.
