At Playtime Paris I had the pleasure of meeting Bonnie Matthews, designer of Blu Pony Vintage who introduced me to the history of Blu Pony Vintage and her new Fall Winter 2014 collection.
Before launching Blu Pony Vintage almost four years ago, Bonnie created a photography production company in 2008 producing fashion shoots. Her photo shoot “Little Rascals Meets Ralph Lauren” inspired Bonnie to launch Blu Pony Vintage, filling the gap for early American apparel in the kids’ market.
“We want to make heirloom pieces,” says Matthews, “given how quickly the little ones sprout up, it’s imperative that my line is made with future generations in mind.”

“Hi I’m Bonnie Matthews the owner and designer of Blu Pony Vintage.
Blu Pony Vintage is boys and girls clothing in sizes 3 months to 14 years, all made in Los Angeles. Inspired by the 1920s to 1940s. Vintage Americana. American Made.

Blu Pony got its start kind of phonetically I guess. I was collecting Depression Era kids clothes, the 1920s, and 30s. I have another company doing photography production. I did a photoshoot where we did Little Rascals meets Ralph Lauren, and it started from there. People loved it. The nostalgia…the heirloom quality of it. It just grew, and here we are 4 years later coming up in March.
Blu Pony Vintage Girls Check Dress
Our signature piece that got us into Blu Pony was these coveralls. One other cute feature is our hang tags with a boy on one side and a girl on the other. And they’re little paper dolls, this actually comes off. This is our third year, so we’re going on our fourth year, and every year the outfit changes.

I’m really excited about this because we have a licensing agreement with Charlie Chapman. We actually came to Paris and went to the offices and met with them. It’s very exciting. Now they have the Blu Pony T-shirt in their office.
The collection for Fall Winter 14, as it always is for Blu Pony is about layering. Because our shipments ship a bit offseason, meaning Winter ships in July, you can start out with our slips that we have in every collection that can be worn as a dress and can be layered, and then peek out just at the bottom.
So besides the pieces mix and matching, you can also put this top over a slip, or you have just the skirt, and then our signature fur coat really completes the outfit.
I fell in love with this deco pattern below when I saw it. I just needed to incorporate it into our party dress. Perfect for a little girl.
The baby collection is new for Autumn Winter 14. What I’m excited about is that we found a factory that does all hand embroidery. I’m going to show you on the chambray because it pops more. It’s all hand done, even the smocking is hand embroidered. We have bonnets that match as well, little booties and gift boxes that also ship with the baby collection.”
Thanks so much to Bonnie Matthews for the interview on Blu Pony Vintage at Playtime Paris.
