Jammies pret-a-porter Kids Interview: Summer 2014 Collection

At Playtime New York I had the pleasure of meeting Meryl and Brian Levy, the brother and sister duo behind the newly launched Jammies prêt-à-porter brand. Sweet enough to eat, Jammies caters to newborns through 12 months with its collection of ribbed bodysuits with inseam snaps, pants and jumpsuits, packaged in adorable little jam jars (recycled, BPA-free plastic) that make for a fun gift.

What inspired you to create your brand and what makes it unique?

Meryl: The original inspiration for Jammies came from when we were kids in the ’80s; Our father came up with the idea of gifting baby clothes packed in a jar to friends or family who was expecting. Even as a child, I thought it was the coolest gift idea and would ask my father to send some “jammies in a jar” so I could gift to the neighborhood babies for whom I babysat.

I always kept the idea in the back of my mind. I had always had the itch to start my own business, and last year I decided it was now or never. When it came to looking for a designer, I didn’t have to look very far—I thought of my brother, Brian, whose artistic style I have always admired. When I contacted Brian, who had recently finished studying architecture in grad school, he loved the idea and was eager to participate.

Although the initial concept came from our father gifting pajamas and it’s obviously the play on word with the name “Jammies”, we didn’t want to limit our product to pajamas. We call our garments “comfort wear” and design them to be sported outside or inside, day or night. We love working with understated colors and tweaking classic silhouettes in a way that still produces fun, modern, super-soft garments for infants.

Tell me a bit about the collection you are showcasing at Playtime

We had a lot of fun creating this collection which includes big, bold stripes in color combinations like “Lychee” and “Basil” which include lots of unexpected accent colors. Our collection of “Ginger” pieces are softer on the eyes and offer buyers a more muted option, more reminiscent of our Fall/Winter 2013 collection. While the collection we’re showing is for Spring/Summer, all styles can work as transition pieces and we love the idea of pairing our Henley Jumpsuit with a cardigan or using the bodysuits as layering pieces as autumn approaches.

What are your favorite outfits in the collection for girls/boys?

Meryl: Almost all the pieces in our SS14 collection can be unisex which is what we love about the fabrics and colors we chose since Jammie’s concept is all about gifting and many times our buyers don’t yet know the gender of the baby they are buying for. It’s hard to choose one outfit but I do love the “Basil” sets which consist of pull-on pants in bold green and ivory stripe and either an ivory tank top or long-sleeved bodysuit. We sourced and unbelievably soft organic cotton/soy jersey fabric for our ivory pieces this season that I’m just in love with.

Brian: The gender neutrality of our Spring/Summer 2014 collection, which Meryl mentioned, is one of the qualities that I am most proud of. Meryl sees “most” of the collection as unisex, whereas I see the whole collection as unisex, and I love that we’ve managed to achieve that without sticking to a palette of blue, pink, and yellow! And the pinks and blues which we do include–take the coral (“Grapefruit”) or the aqua–work equally well on boys and girls! As for pieces, I love our new Henley jumpsuit. I think its look is so satisfyingly suggestive of summer and sun and relaxing vacation.
