Nixie Kids Clothing Interview: Spring 2014 Collection

At Playtime Paris I had the pleasure of interviewing Nicole Frobusch designer of Nixie Clothing based out of Hackney, East London.

For years I’ve admired Nicole’s design style which is a real fusion between fashion and art. When you meet Nicole you get a feel for her passion for design, the inspiration behind Nixie Clothing, and the creation process behind each original season collection.

Below is the first part of my interview with Nicole when she shared the Nixie Clothing Spring Summer 2014 Ocean collection and how Nixie Clothing was started. Soon to follow is Nicole sharing the inspiration behind her Fall/Winter 2014 collection.

Interview with Nicole Frobusch on Nixie Clothing’s SS14 Ocean Collection

“Spring-Summer 2014 is based on flowing shapes, this inspiration coming from the Ocean. Fish swimming and floating in the Ocean. How certain fish and their fins flow in the water. So the fabrics represent that.

There are jelly capes with chiffon flowery inserts which I love because it’s a really easy pullover thing for chilly summer evenings.

The color scheme is dark greys and mustards broken up with some neons and some pinks as well. So it’s quite colorful.

The idea of the label started after I gave birth to my first daughter Ivy. I was trying to find clothing which wasn’t so conventional, and it wasn’t pink or blue. And over the last 14 years, things in the kids business changed incredibly. 14 years ago there was nothing. You could go to Gap, Baby Gap or H&M and there wasn’t a lot of very high-end designers. Which weren’t really my taste at the time. It wasn’t quirky enough. It wasn’t playful enough.

Always the environmental factor was a huge thing for me. I didn’t want to put my child into mass-produced clothes made by children.

I wanted something unique, and I wanted something that wasn’t compromising the earth. So I started chopping up woolen jumpers and making little rompers. That’s not when the label was born. The label was born much as when people started commenting on my daughter’s clothing saying, “Where did you get this from and where the label is from, ooh, where is this from?”

Then, when my second daughter was born after about 2-3 years I thought “Maybe I should start a label, maybe I should start selling this stuff. Maybe I should give it a go. And here I am.”

Thanks to Nicole Frobusch for the video interview at Playtime Paris!
