Ben Sherman kids collection is inspired from the very successful menswear collection, which established the brand’s name. The Ben Sherman company was founded in 1963 by Arthur Benjamin Sugarman (1925-1987), who was born in Brighton, UK. In 1946 he emigrated to the United States, via Canada, and changed his nationality to American. He married the daughter of a Californian clothes producer and later returned to Brighton, UK, where he bought a shirt factory.
In the early 1960s Sugarman recognized that early London-based modern jazz fans were eagerly buying the Oxford-cloth American button-down shirt brands such as Brooks Brothers, Arrow, and Hathaway, that were worn by visiting American jazz artists like Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Oscar Peterson. At the time, these were only available from official importers.
Sugarman decided to produce a version of these Oxford-cloth American button-down shirts, along with a collection of the colorful, resort-wear vacation clothes that were becoming popular around the world.
The collection was well accepted, especially since Sugarman was offering higher-quality materials and stitching detail than the American imported shirts.
In 1965 the Ben Sherman Originals label was created the company had opened a small office in London that was the showroom for their button down shirt and vacation beachwear collections.
Ben Sherman was a legend in his own right. A man described as ‘always embracing the new and the different’; someone constantly searching for the best of things. He disliked regularity, preferring to search out things that were perceived as unavailable to him. He was a passionate businessman with an artist’s soul.
Hard rocking young lads will have many styles of the brand’s trademark woven shirts to fill their closets as well as mod-inspired knitwear, polo’s, cargo pants, sweatshirts and tees. Far cry from its modest beginnings as a shirt maker, Ben Sherman is now established as a world-class lifestyle brand and true British success story making its mark in fashion.
