Caramel baby and child began back in 1999 when Eva Karayiannis, trained as a lawyer, decided to pursue her love of children’s clothes. Eva spent two years tracking down handcrafted knitwear from Peru and artisan clothes from young British designers. Soon she took a big step and began designing her own collection wanting to create a modern, distinctive style that is individual yet luxurious, understated, beautiful and as useful as possible. In September 1999 Eva opened her shop on Brompton Road, one of London’s prime shopping districts, decorated in Caramel’s signature style, traditional but with a modern twist. An instant success, shops in London, Paris in and New York begin to wholesale the carmelbaby&child collection.
I’ve always loved children’s clothes even before I had children myself. I began designing with the aim to change people’s minds about childrenswear. Just because children’s clothes had a relaxed quality, there was no reason why they shouldn’t feel modern. Just because they have some of the formality of continental Europe, why shouldn’t they also have a little laid back Englishness? This is the essence of caramel. Our clothes are functional and we try to go beyond trends. Our focus is still and always has been attention to detail. The distinctive collar or garment silhouette cut from exquisite clothes and nostalgic knits in contemporary hues. – explains Eva Karayiannis.
Caramel baby and child pushes the traditional boundaries of the color palette used for children’s clothes, creating a playful rhythm of layering colors and textures. Today Caramel is well known for its tradition of creating confident bold, confident prints and distinctive colorways.
Caramel baby and child’s versatile collection includes three uniquely caramel color stories. Textured cotton shirts and striped jersey in a palette of stone grey and oatmeal are cleverly complemented by popping pink silk dresses and tops, intricately hand finished with delicate embroidery.
For girls, neat canvas collars with peachy polka dots paired with soft basics in forest green create a timeless feel. Exclusive caramel prints of daisies and checks link the stories together alongside heritage liberty florals. Beautifully crafted for comfort and ease, contrast piping puff sleeves and smock detailing make up the finishes for babies and big girls.
For boys, vibrant lemon yellow adds a touch of modernity to classic knitwear and summer shorts, while relaxed fit toweling, blue pinstripes, and loose summer jackets create fresh looks for boys all age.
