Indygo Artwear is hand-painted in Cape Town, South Africa at the foot of Table Mountain. The allure of this exceptional clothing concept lies in its personal touch: authentic brushstrokes & hand-mixed colors, which make each garment unique. Indygo signifies individual creativity and the inspiration offered by the natural surroundings of ‘the Fairest Cape’.
Since 1992, Elana van der Walt has been designing unique one-of-a-kind original hand-painted dresses from her studio in Cape Town. Each garment is an original work of art.
Elana’s designs are inspired by her surroundings. Her work reflects a free-spirited attitude and upholds timeless values and aesthetic qualities which are so rare in this technological age.
Artists hand-paint every single cloth – so unlike the rest of the industry, we work with large ‘canvasses’ as opposed to rolls of printed fabric. This trademark handpainting aspect is labor-intensive, providing much needed employment in Cape Town. Besides its timeless artistic appeal, our customers like the comfortable styling in pure cotton, easy washcare & renowned durability. We started exporting in 1998 and the USA is our main market.
Since I published this article, Indygo Artwear has discontinued its girls’ clothing brand. Discover more of my favorite kids clothing from South Africa including Naartjie Baby & Kids.
