3.1 Phillip Lim creates beautiful clothes with added touches of madness, striving towards the imperfection. The result is a creation of individual looks that are unexpected, unplanned but completely relevant. For Lim the design process begins by absorbing shapes, colors, and textures from his surroundings and personal experiences and mixing them with luxurious fabrics and thoughtful nuances.
Creative director and co-founder of 3.1 Phillip Lim, Phillip Lim has quickly made a huge splash in the fashion industry starting with women’s wear and now men’s, kids’, accessories, and shoes. Phillip Lim today is recognized as one of the most talented and successful young designers in the industry today.
Lim was born in Thailand in 1972 to Chinese immigrants who moved to southern California to escape Cambodia’s civil war. What’s interesting about Phillip Lim is that he didn’t plan on becoming a designer in the fashion industry, it came to him when he picked up a weekend job at Barneys in Beverly Hills.
After being bit by the fashion bug at Barneys, Lim held an internship with Katayone Adeli, which eventually turned into a permanent position on their design team. Lim, after working with Katayone Adeli for a number of years, decided to launch his first collection with business partner and friend, Wen Zhou.
When Lim debuted his initial women’s wear collection in 2005, it was an instant success, earning him a number of awards and nominations from the fashion elite.
It looks like the Kid by 3.1 Phillip Lim collection has been put on hold for now. Hopefully, we’ll see a new kids collection in the near future…I’ll be sure to keep you up to date when it does!
