Sew Lati Kids Couture Interview: Spring Summer 2014

At Playtime New York I had the pleasure of meeting TJ Hamilton the designer behind Sew Lati Couture that was launched earlier this year. TJ has followed her passion for fashion by creating a distinctly high fashion feel for boys and girls ages 2-6 while keeping comfort and practicality in mind.

“The inspiration for Sew Lati are my three kids. I first started when I had my eldest son. I found it very hard to shop and get clothes for him. I’d go into a store and I’d see racks of girls clothes and I’d go over and see only one rack for boys clothes.

I’ve always been into fashion and I just thought why not make my own line? And that’s how it really came about. I’m really into high-fashion and I pretty much wanted to do it for kids. But there’s only so much you can do for a kid because he’s jumping off slides at the playground you still want to make it comfortable. So that was my focus. I pretty much say it’s my mini-me. With my boys, I always wanted to find my mini-me of my husband and for my daughter a mini-me of me.

Everything in my collection is something that I or my husband would wear but it’s still practical for kids. It’s still comfortable and kids can wear it so we both win. I can get my fashion for kids and they can be comfortable.

Is the brand more of a boutique-style?
I think so but I also think it could be in a department store and this is a goal. I just find that it’s unique and we pay lots of attention to details. I’m really into colors, especially for the boys and that’s something that some people are afraid of, to put their boys in bright colors. It’s more of European flair and I think that’s something that’s missing so I’m bringing that here.

Tell me about the Spring Summer 2014 Collection. What are your favorites?
So this collection is called the Summer in the Hamptons. The colors really inspired me. When I think of Spring melons, sea foams, and just the ocean, all those colors come to mind. We were in the Hamptons last summer and I love the way they dress their kids.

So my focus is really keeping the kids comfortable and looking fashionable. You still want them to be comfortable and you still want to be able to take them to a fancy party or somewhere nice. Take for example this blazer and cargo pant. The material is really comfortable and soft, so boys can still look nice but be comfortable.

The detail is really big for my line I think that’s what makes Sew Lati unique. We have a linen suit here that has lots of details, for example in the pocket. For instance, putting the melon grosgrain ribbon on this collared shirt here. Also with the linen shorts, you’ll find our Sew Lati detail again with the pockets.”
